After 96 years, France ended conscription on June 28th. France had planned to end conscription as soon a drive to attract volunteers for the military got up to speed. More volunteers came forward faster than expected, thus the surprise move to end conscription immediately (just in time for annual Bastille Day on July 14th, a day when politicians love to make patriotic speeches.)
