The Royal Australian Navy plans to provide a "quick fix" for the first two Collins-class diesel submarines, giving them a satisfactory combat capability despite their unreliable combat data management system. The quick fix, to be completed by Dec 2000, will cost $178 million. It will take $400 million to completely replace the data systems and other unreliable equipment on all six subs.--Stephen V Cole
