The Loya Jirga elected Hamid Karzia as provisional president of Afghanistan. In 18 months there are to be elections for an elected president and parliament. There is pressure to adopt Islamic Sharia law for the nation. There is also much frustration over the lack of effort to crack down on corruption in government (there has never been a clean government in Afghanistan.)

Some 1400 American and British troops continue to search eastern Afghanistan for Taliban and al Qaeda members and weapons.
