Several recent killings of foreigners (two Japanese tourists and a British engineer), which the Taliban took credit for, has led the UN to urge aid workers to leave Afghanistan. 

Some 200 Afghan police, and a few U.S. troops, attacked Taliban positions near Kandahar, killing at least 13 and arresting over 40 suspects.
