Pakistan and Afghanistan are having a war of words over just how energetic, and effective, Pakistan is in stopping the Pushtun tribes along the border from giving refuge to Taliban and al Qaeda members. The fact of the matter is that the Pushtun tribesmen on the Pakistan side of the border have never been under as much government control as the tribesmen on the Afghan side. Pakistani police and army operations against the tribes have been slow, and cautious, trying to gain cooperation without triggering a tribal uprising. But meanwhile, the Afghan government has to deal with Taliban and al Qaeda raids across the border.
