Since the Russian army left Afghanistan in the late 1980s, 1.6 million mines, dud shells and other explosives have been cleared from the land. There are still 229 square kilometers left to clear. Within that area are 87,000 houses that cannot be used because of the mine danger. Each day, 5-10 people are killed by the remaining mines.
