Opposition leader Ismail Khan, and two other men, escaped from a Taliban jail in Kandahar. Khan, captured three years ago, was known as the "Lion of Herat" and was a formidable foe of the Taliban. There is increasing dissention and corruption among the Taliban and this no doubt played a role is enabling the three men to flee a maximum security prison. The official announcements made reference to a plot. A reward was offered for information on where the escapees were.
