Canada has ordered Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles from the US to replace the RIM-7P missiles now carried by eight Halifax-class frigates for point defense. Each frigate normally carries 16 missiles, but could carry 28 in wartime. The missiles will cost $334 million. Some modifications will have to be made to the ships to accommodate the new missiles.--Stephen V Cole
