 Incumbent president Olusegun Obasanjo, a southern Christian and his reform party, won re-election and his party won a majority in parliament and most of the governor posts. This is seen as threatening to the many politicians who live off massive corruption. The question is, will the corrupt politicians take up arms and fight for the right to steal.

In the north, many corrupt politicians and their well organized parties lost of Islamic radical candidates.
