Violence continues in the southern oil region, as gangs of local young men interfere with pumping and pipeline operations. The navy has sent in armed sailors to confront the gangs, but this has made matters worth, with several gang members being shot dead and sabotage increasing. Each of the dozens of gangs, which are usually content to extort payments from the oil company, has a tribal affiliation and there is an increase in tribal conflicts.
