The two major Kurdish factions that rule northern Iraq are still in trouble. They have been unable to negotiate away all of their differences and have continued to anger the Turks by saying that Kurds would retake oil rich Kirkuk if the Saddam government began to crumble.

US and British warplanes bombed air defense sites  in the north.
