An American F-16 based in Turkey had engine trouble and crashed as it headed for a patrol inside northern Iraq. The piloted parachuted to safety. If the engine had failed a little while later, the pilot would have been down in the vicinity of Iraqi troops. A race to get to the pilot would have followed, as the Iraqis are keen to capture an American pilot for propaganda purposes.
