 Pakistan says it has infiltrated al Qaeda groups inside Pakistan and is hunting known members. The government says that it knows of al Qaeda plans to attack government leaders, and of its relationships with Pakistani Islamic radical groups. Back in the 1980s, the government first began to back Islamic radicalism as a way to revive the country. That didn't work, and now the more numerous Islamic radical groups want to establish a religious dictatorship, and support groups like al Qaeda.
