India-Pakistan: June 26, 2002

On the Afghan border, suspected al Qaeda fighters killed ten Pakistani soldiers during a four hour gun battle. The Pakistani troops were acting on a tip obtained by FBI agents working in Pakistan. There were some 500 Pakistani troops in the area. Local tribal chiefs have agreed to assist in the hunt for the al Qaeda (or whoever they were) gunmen.

Kashmiri separatists are criticizing the Pakistani government for giving in to India and cracking down on separatist operations in Kashmir. The separatists are trying to mobilize public opinion against the government, but the public appears to be more concerned with the possibility of nuclear war, and Islamic radical terrorism within Pakistan.

There is still some machine-gun fire across the border in Kashmir and further south, but most of the Indian and Pakistani artillery has stayed silent.
