India-Pakistan: April 3, 2002

Firing across the Line of Control in Kashmir left one Pakistani civilian dead. In Kashmir, rebel activity left four rebels, two former rebels, attacked by their former comrades and two civilians dead.

Several of the foreigners arrested last week in Pakistani police raids were positively identified as senior al Qaeda officials. This has proved somewhat embarrassing to the government, as much has been made about troops being sent to the Afghan border and "sealing" it. In truth, the border has long been impossible to seal, and the frequent crossing of the border by smugglers demonstrates this. Meanwhile, eleven men have been charged with the murder of a Wall Street Journal reporter in January. Several of the accused are still at large.
