India-Pakistan: January 19, 2002

Apparently the Indians will not start pulling back their troops from the border until they see the Pakistanis continue cracking down on Islamic radicals over a period of several weeks. So far, Pakistan has arrested some 2,000 Islamic radicals. In Kashmir, rebel violence left five rebels and a soldier dead. The rebels are upping the ante by demanding that all elected village leaders resign by the end of the month (allowing separatist rebels to put their own guy in charge.) Some 25 village leaders have been shot or killed by rebels recently.
