India has ordered 17 Jaguar strike aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which will build them under license from Britain. India originally bought 120 of the planes, but has lost 17 in various accidents. Buying these 17 as replacements will allow India to raise a sixth squadron of Jaguars. --Stephen V Cole

December 31; Pakistan has bought one Agosta-90B diesel submarine from France and is building two more at Karachi under license. The Pakistanis are reportedly marketing future production of the 90B to other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and unspecified Asian nations. --Stephen V Cole
