Britain plans to build a class of 12 Type-45 anti-aircraft destroyers (cost = $9 billion) to replace the aging Type-42s by 2014. Current plans are to have Vosper Thornycroft and BAE Systems Marine jointly design and produce the ships. The Type-45 will carry the Principle Anti-Air Missile System (the European effort to copy Aegis).--Stephen V Cole
