Chemical weapons from World War I are still a problem in Belgium, which was the scene of most of the worst fighting in the 1914-18 war. The Belgium army still maintains bomb disposal units, which are called out 7-8 times a day to remove World War I era munitions uncovered by farmers or construction workers. The 300 tons of munitions removed each year includes some 20 tons of shells containing poison gas.
