Some 150 GSPC fighters went into northern Mauritania and attacked an army base guarded by fifty soldiers. Fifteen Mauritanian soldiers were killed before the GSPC force withdrew and went back to Algeria. The attackers lost at least nine men during several hours of fighting, which wounded 17 of the Mauritanian soldiers as well. The attackers stole six vehicles, and burned two others, as they got away.
