The government said that 20,000 rebels had been killed since the rebel (Islamic radical) violence began in 1992. Another 130,000 police and civilians (mainly civilians) have been killed in the violence. The government says that only about 400 armed rebels are still at large, but that these men continue to attack civilians. So far this year, 2,000 have died in the violence. Today, police killed five rebels.
