The US Air Force, unable to see the replacement of its aircraft somewhere in its budgetary future, is spending more and more of its research money on how to keep old aircraft flying. By 2019, the average age of the air fleet will hit 30 years. Air Force officials say they are breaking new ground as their service has never, in its entire history, worked with an inventory of aircraft that are mostly in service life extension periods.--Stephen V Cole
