The Pentagon had asked industry for proposals for a new weapon that could destroy stockpiles of chemical or biological weapons without risk of contaminating the surrounding area. (The US fears that potential enemies will store such weapons in populated areas to dissuade attack.) After months of evaluations, not one proposal was found practical. --Stephen V Cole
