Sri Lanka: May 12, 2000

Israel has agreed to supply Kfir fighter-bombers for $3 million each. Sri Lanka already has five Kfirs (a 1960s design, sort of a super Mig-21.) How many would be supplied was not announced. LTTE rebels were now only a few kilometers from Jaffna city, and the rebels broadcast warnings to the 500,000 residents that they should evacuate before fighting moved into the city itself. The government said 42 soldiers had been killed in the last two days fighting around Jaffna.
