The chief judge of Iran's courts, which are dominated by Islamic conservatives, admitted that the police had commonly used force to get prisoners to confess. Often, the prisoners would die, and when this happened to foreigners, as was the case with a Canadian journalist, the issue became a major news story. The judge government said such practices were un-Islamic and should stop. Most Iranians don't believe this will happen.
