Over the weekend, there were a series of riots among the Arab inhabitants of southeastern Iran, stirred up a rumor that the government intended to initiate a mass resettlement of the Arab residents. The violence left five dead and several hundred arrested. Police and troops flooded into the area. The immediate cause was rumors of a letter, from a senior government official, discussing the forcible removal of many of the two million Arab-Iranians to northern Iran.
