Iran continues to pour money into it's domestic military production companies. With the economy in a shambles because of restrictions imposed by the religious conservatives, investment in locally designed produced weapons is a major source of jobs and national pride. The religious conservatives back this production, especially when it involves weapons (like rockets and small arms) that can be used to supply Islamic militants. Iran continues to be a major buyer of North Korean military equipment and technologies. US spy satellites regularly track Iranian freighters picking up cargo at North Korean ports. Most of the weapons produced in Iran are variants on older American equipment. This is good practice for Iranian engineers. More modern equipment is being bought from Russia.
