Romania announced that it will end military conscription in 2007. This is part of Romania's long-term plan to professionalize its military.

Bulgaria said an Bulgarian arms company had won a CENTCOM contract to provide light weapons for the new Iraqi army. The primary weapon will be a Bulgarian-produced Kalashnikov assault rifle
