RFE reported that Croatia has decided to reduce its military to 21,000 troops (from around 34,000). The armed forces will be deployed as four corps. The four corps bases will be Zagreb, Osijek, Rijeka, an Pula. Ultimately, Croatia intends to meet NATO military standards, with the long-range goal of joining NATO. Slovenia is ending conscription as part of its military transformation process. Slovenia is well on its way to NATO membership. Several sources report that Slovenia could be admitted to NATO in late 2002.
