Turkey has announced that it will clear the minefields on its border with Iraq and Syria and convert the areas into farmland. The Ministry of National Defense is rearranging its budget to buy the needed equipment. The Turks plan to complete the removals within two years. One reason for the Turkish decision is that the PKK rebel threat from bases in northern Iraq has been considerably reduced.--Stephen V Cole
