Balkans: January 22, 2000

The Serb opposition coalition, now officially called "Alliance for Change," has once again approached the European Union about increasing humanitarian aid to Serbia. StrategyPage speculated several weeks ago that the Serb opposition might use "international aid" to shake Milosevic's grip on power in Serbia. The opposition can get the world (especially the EU) to send Serbia aid and provide investment. Milosevic can't.

January 22; Serbian sources say that at least two of the three of the men allegedly involved in planning and carrying out the Arkan assassination were former Serb policemen who became involved in organized crime. The three men arrested in the slaying are Dobrosav Gavric, Dejan Pitulie, and Vujadin Krstic. Gavric has been identified as the triggerman.
