Sudan: April 2, 2004


The UN Security Council called for an end to fighting in Sudans western Darfur region. One UN official even went so far as to call the situation in Darfur ethnic cleansing. The UN official said that in Darfur the evidence demonstrates the systematic depopulation of areas is occurring. People are not necessarily killed then. They are moved away...I would say it is ethnic cleansing, but not genocide." Well, choose your words carefully, but it is a scorched earth strategy intended to eliminate towns and villages supporting the Darfur rebels.
