Sudan's civil war is becoming an oil war. Guerrillas have attacked the new oil pipeline system repeatedly. The attacks not only get headlines but hurt the government economically. (Sudan may earn as much as million dollars a day in oil revenues.) Now comes a new form of economic war. The US has now imposed economic sanctions on Sudapet Ltd., Sudan's state-owned oil company. In part, the sancitons forbid US companies from dealing with anew joint venture set up by Sudapet. (Sudapet's partners are the China National Petroleum Corp, Malaysia's state-owned Petronas, and Canadian-based Talisman Energy Corp.)
