Kurdish War: August 24, 2003

Archives

The army says that several hundred PKK rebels have been leaving camps in northern Iraq, and heading back into Turkey. The PKK fear the presence of  more American troops in northern Iraq, and pro-American (and anti-PKK) Kurds. While many Kurds in northern Iraq support PKK goals, the Iraqi Kurds are feeling very pro-US at the moment.

Although the PKK has officially rejected the Turkish government's amnesty for PKK fighters, many PKK fighters have not. The PKK rank and file have taken a beating, but physically and emotionally, over the last decade and many are willing to call it quits. The more determined PKK members see this is as treason, and PKK has had bloody internal "purges" in the past. Another such murderous internal battle may be brewing.
