Adult Supervision Has a Price

September 20, 2007: One of the most in-demand specialists in the U.S. Army are Human Intelligence Collection NCOs. It's easy enough to find bright recruits and train them to be Human Intelligence Collection specialists. But these young troops need adult supervision. The expansion of the Human Intelligence Collection field has been so rapid, that there has not been sufficient time to develop experienced sergeants in the field. So, the army is offering mid-level (E-6 and E-7) NCOs in other fields the opportunity to switch jobs. That involves six months of pretty intense training, and a guaranteed trip to Iraq or Afghanistan, and lots of time outside the wire. But there are benefits, like up to $80,000 in re-enlistment and critical skills bonuses. Promotions can be expected to come faster as well, including a shot at Warrant Officer positions. There are some restrictions. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, and be able to get a top secret clearance.
