Poland has asked for bids between six and ten tactical transport aircraft, expecting to pay about $250 million. These will replace the old An-26 Curl transport planes by 2006. Likely bidders include the Franco-Italian ATR-42, the Spanish C-295M, the US-Italian C-27J, and the Ukrainian An-32. Poland has promised to buy four aircraft in the C-130 class, capable of carrying loads of eight tons, but has not taken any steps in that direction.--Stephen V Cole
