The Sudanese government claimed that a peace settlement with the SPLA is near at hand. In an interview that appeared in the Saudi Arabian press, a government spokesman said that during the six-year long peace transition period Sudans current president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, will continue as chief executive. The SPLAs John Garang will serve as Bashirs deputy.
