The Burundi government reported approximately 15,000 civilians fled new fighting. The Bunrdi Army fought FDD guerrillas in several small actions beginning August 17. The major action occurred near the Mpanda commune (western Burundi). The FDD claimed the government launched a series of rocket attacks in the area. The rockets are inaccurate area weapons and using them could be the reason civilians fled the region. On August 20 a major clash took place near the town of Gasenyi.
