The Burundian government reported a grenade attack in a market in Kinama district wounded 57 civilians. The attack occurred August 31. Also on August 31, the Burundian Army reported that a group of villagers said they had captured a Hutu rebel leader near the village of Murwi. No name was given. However, a series of firefights had occurred for a week near Murwi, between Hutu militias and local defense forces. One report said that 30 rebels were killed and 14 of the dead had been identified as Rwandan Hutus. A report of August 26 said 500 Rwandan Hutu rebels had moved into western Burundi from the DRC. The dead may well have been from that infiltrating Hutu militia force. On August 29 FDD Hutu rebels killed three civilians when they attacked the village of Nkondo (Makanda province).
