Despite threats of violence from his followers, police arrested Jemaah Islamiyah leader Abu Bakar Bashir and removed him to a hospital where he could be kept in isolation and questioned. Hundreds of Bashir's followers demonstrated, but riot police held them at bay.

The government is setting up a top level organization to coordinate anti-terrorism activities (intelligence, police work and cooperation with foreign anti-terror operations.)
