The three decades of Suharto dictatorship did not allow Moslem radical groups to operate. But that has all changed as several radical Islamic organizations have arisen. Laskar Jihad operates against  in the Maluku. islands, and has done so since 1999. The organization has branches in 41 towns across the country and claims over 10,000 armed members. Helping them out is Laskar Hizbullah, which operates in Central Java. The Front of the Defenders of Islam says it has seven million members. This group sponsors raids on bars and night clubs. HAMAS is a student group wit 10,000 members in West Java. The Majli Mujahideen in Central Java was set up last year to undertake the imposition of Sharia law throughout Indonesia.
