The government says it has begun to disarm anti-independence East Timor militiamen in West Timor. A four day sweep is planned, to end on September 26. The government also says it lacks the money to resettle the 100,000 refugees in West Timor. These are mainly Indonesians who lived in East Timor. Many supported the anti-independence East Timor militiamen and do not want to go back to West Timor.
