China: October 26, 1999

The crack down on Falungong continues and becomes more repressive. Two Falungong members have died in police custody recently. The sect is being accused of just about every sin imaginable, including passing state secrets to foreign government. In Taiwan, the government warns that China could obtain air superiority over the Taiwan Straits in the next three to five years. China has been spending billions to buy high performance Russian fighters. In the past, however, China has not been able to train good fighter pilots. If the Chinese can clean up their act here, then the Taiwanese will have something to worry about. Taiwan is also trying to get ABM (anti-ballistic missile) technology from the United States.

Help Keep Us Afloat!

Ad revenues are down across the internet. The response has been to plaster sites with ads. We don’t want to follow the crowd. But here is the deal we cannot keep our site relative ad free without your help.

Each month we need your subscriptions or contributions plus what meager ad revenue we do receive to stay in business. You can support us in the following ways:

  1. Make sure you spread the word about us. Two ways to do that are to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
  2. Subscribe to our daily newsletter. We’ll send the news to your email box, and you don’t have to come to the site unless you want to read columns or see photos.
  3. You can contribute to the health of StrategyPage. A contribution is not a donation that you can deduct at tax time, but a form of crowdfunding. We store none of your information when you contribute..
