Uzbekistan, where a thousand US troops occupy an airbase, has a dictatorial government that is coming down hard on local Islamic fundamentalists. Over 7,000 locals are in jail for religious reasons. The government is using its current support of American operations in Afghanistan as a way to avoid US criticism of the current government.
