The Army is working on a new mine detector that uses ground-penetrating radar rather than simply detecting the magnetic field of buried metal. The new system can detect plastic mines and can tell the difference between a buried can and a mine. Cyterra Corporation has developed the technology over the last ten years, and now has a $12 million contract to produce working prototypes. The system should reach the field in 2004.--Stephen V Cole
