The president appointed a new prime minister; Mahinda Rajapakse, who is a close political ally of the president. The political party the president and prime minister belong to controls 105 seats in the 225 member parliament. This means there must be a coalition with some minor parties to obtain the needed majority of 113 seats. The new government cannot resume negotiations with the LTTE until the LTTE resolves its current internal
