Moslems in the east complain that rebels are trying to drive them out of the area. The Tamils are Hindu and have been hostile to Moslems for centuries. By driving Moslems out of majority Tamil areas, the rebels will have better control of the population.  Moslems are 7.5 percent of the population, Hindus (mostly Tamils), 12.6 percent.
