December 31, 1999

The year ended with heavy fighting between the army and LTTE on land and at sea. Several dozen were killed (both sides.)

December 30; LTTE guerillas continued to attack army defenders in the Elephant Pass area. The army appears to be holding their own and preparing for a counteroffensive.

December 29; Heavy fighting, with a lot of artillery fire, continued in the north.

December 28; Artillery duels, and some infantry clashes continued in the north. Casualties for both sides are running at several dozen a day.

December 27; LTTE guerillas kept up the pressure on army defenders of the Elephant Pass area. If the LTTE gets past the army positions here, they will have access to the Tamil populated areas on the east coast, making the LTTE an even more formidable force (greater recruiting area, more coastal area from which to smuggle in weapons.)

December 26 ;LTTE guerillas appear determined to break out of the Jaffna peninsula, as they continue to attack government positions in the Elephant Pass area. The LTTE has publicly vowed to take back the area.

December 24; Heavy artillery fire and some infantry skirmishing continued in the Elephant Pass area.
