Israel: March 1, 2000

Five pro-Israeli militiamen were killed by a remote control Hezbollah bomb as they drove past on patrol. Hezbollah then mortared the area and killed one civilian and wounded two others. Israeli artillery responded by shelling Hezbollah positions. This does little good, as Hezbollah has most of their key installations located in caves. Hezbollah knows when the Israelis will respond, for Hezbollah decides when to attack. Israel is reluctant to go after the Hezbollah bases with ground forces, as this would cause more Israeli losses and likely result in fighting with Lebanese and Syrian forces.
