The AUC is defeating FARC efforts to move into the urban areas (where most of the population lives.) Police estimate that the AUC control's most of the shanty towns in the major city's and are slowly pushing FARC out. The violence in Colombia's cities is among the highest in the world. While European cities have a murder rate of about one per 100,000 population per year, and the worst American city (New Orleans) has 20 murders per 100,000 people, many Colombian cities have rates of 200 murders per 100,000.
